Vila Real de Santo António - Superb 18th century architecture.
Vila Real de Santo António

This superb example of 18th century town planning was based on the reconstruction of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. Built in only 5 months on the orders of the Marquis de Pombal, the prime-minister, during 1774, the town is best appreciated on foot.

A stroll through the historic centre should, ideally, begin at the Praça Marquês de Pombal where you can see some of the most important 18th century buildings in the region, including the Vila Real Town Hall.

As you progress through the town taking in the harmony of this classic architectural embodiment of 18th century Enlightenment, be sure to visit the Parish Church which contains a notable collection of 18th century statues and the Manuel Cabanas Museum.
