The Islands - Delightfull barrier islands with sandy beaches.
Islands
Easily accessible from the main land the central Algarve boasts a number of delightfull barrier islands:
FAROL
The small island of Farol, like the nearby island of Barreta is a solitary sun-kissed paradise, untroubled by ferry connections with the mainland. If you manage to get hold of a boat, you will be able to take advantages of the pleasures of sun, sea and sand without people. Apart from one or two fishermen’s shacks, the island is temptingly deserted.
ILHA DE FARO
The Island of Faro links to the mainland by a causeway road. Possessed of a wondrous beach, there is also a small village centre comprising restaurants and cafés.
ILHA DE TAVIRA
The Ilha de Tavira is one of the string of sand barrier islands that forms part of the Ria Formosa Nature Park. At the eastern end of the island you will find a camp site, a small number of restaurant/cafés and a superb beach, considered by many to be among the best in southern Europe.
In the west of the Island there is another wonderful beach, Praia do Barril. At the height of the summer season there are regular ferry connections to the Ilha de Tavira, however if you wish to go to the beach at Barril, you can also take the miniature train that runs across the wetlands from Pedras d’el Rei a short bus-ride from Tavira city centre.
ILHA DA CULATRA
The Ilha da Culatra is one of the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa Nature Park. The beautiful beach of Culatra is famed not only for its pristine white sands, but for the clearness of the waters just off-shore. With underwater visibility extending to a good 15 metres, divers and snorkellers are well favoured – and with so many species of fish around (over 100) there is much to see. The interior of the island is famed for its rich diversity of plant life. There is a regular ferry to Culatra from Olhão.
ILHA DA ARMONA
At Armona, a luxurious beach stretches as far as the eye can see adjacent to the warm azure waters. There is a small fishing hamlet on the island, but otherwise there is just sand and more sand and a huge helping of peace and tranquillity.
